Exercise 2: Conversations-Friends on Campus.
       In some conversations in the listening section on the Paper-Based TOEFL or the Computer-Based TOEFL, you will be asked to recall information exchanged in conversations among friends in a variety of settings on campus. Choose the best answer.

(A). The man's graduation.
(B). The couple's engagement.
(C). The man's smoking.

Narrator: Listen to part of a conversation between two students on campus.
Man:        We seem to be having this conversation over and over again.
Women:  You're right.
Man:        Look, i know how you feel about my smoking. You don't have to tell me every day.
Women:  I'm sorry. I worry about you.
Man:        I know. But work and school have me so stress out. Maybe I will be able to quit after I graduate.
Women:  Let's be honest. There's away going to be a reason not to. After you graduate, it's going to be hard to find a job, then there will be the stress from just starting a job, then...
Man:       Okay, I get your point. It's just so hard. You don't really understand because you never smoked.
Women: You need some help. Why don't you go to a doctor?
Man:       You mean a psychiatrist.
Women: No, I don't. I mead a general practitioner. Maybe you get a patch, or... or some pills, well, I don't know, something to help you with the withdrawal. Because that's what it is.
Man:      Really, I believe I can quit on my own. Just not right now. But i will think about what you said. I will.
Women: All right. I won't mention it for a week. Then I want to know your decision. Because if you don't get some help, I need to rethink our plans.
Man:      You mean you'd break our engagement over this? I can't believe it!
Women: I don't know. I love you, but I am not sure I could accept everything that goes along with the smoking.
AUDIO:

The terms we have learned-pitch, half step, whole step, enharmonic, and related terms-are basic to any discussion of melody. They refer to the constituent parts of melody and are therefore fundamental to understanding it's qualities, which we will discuss next.

The score is reported separately form the TOEFL score. It's not included in the computation of the total TOEFL score and does not affect your score on the multiple-choice TOEFL. You should write about 300 words or three to five short paragraphs.

 This section tests your ability to understand reading passages like those in here. After each passage, you will answer questions about it. You will have 25 minutes to read each passage and answer the comprehension questions. You may use to notes to answer. There are to types of reading comprehension questions. The multiple-choice question require that you choose the best of four possible answers. The computer-assisted questions require that you follow directions on the screen. You may return to previous questions in the same reading passage, but after you go to the next passage.

The independent topics are very general and do not require any specialized knowledge to the subject to answer them. Technical words are explained in the text or in the glossary for the integrated. Most of the topics ask you to agree or disagree with a statement or or to express an opinion.

KOREA:
Korea is situated on the Korean peninsula, which spans 1,100 kilometers north to south. The Koren Peninsula lies on the northeastern section of the Asian Continent, where Korean waters are joined by the western-most parts of the Pacific. The peninsula shares its northern border with China and Russia. To its east is the East Sea, beyond which neighboring Japan lies. In addition to the mainland peninsula, Korea includes some 3,200islands. Koreans are primarily one ethnic family and speak one language. Sharing distinct physical characteristic, they are believe to be descendants of several Mongol tribes that migrated onto the Korean peninsula from central Asia. All Koreans speak and write the same language, which has been a decisive factor in forging their strong national identity. Koreans have developed several different dialects in addition to the standard used in Seoul. Ancient Korea was characterized by clan communities that combined to from small town-states. By the mid-sixth century, the Silla Kingdom had brought under its central all of the neighboring Gaya Kingdom. Despite frequent foreign invasions, the Korean Peninsula has been ruled by a single government since the Silla unification in 688 while maintaining its political independence and cultural and ethnic heritage.
